    OpenSUSE 11.0 Released

    It seems a fertile period for Open Source software. After the release of Mozilla Firefox 3 and Wine 1.0, yesterday Novell released OpenSUSE 11.0.

    OpenSUSE 11.0 ReleasedThis release come as a DVD ISO so it will take some time to download it, but this choice offers the great benefit of allowing the user to choose what packages to actually install (something that I personally like and I miss from the Kubuntu installation).

    Some of the peculiarities of this new version are:

    • the new installer;
    • SLAB menu;
    • Compiz Fusion;
    • OpenOffice 2.4;
    • Firefox 3.0;
    • YaST and SaX2 ported to Qt 4.

    While users can get OpenSUSE for free by downloading the ISO, Novell is also offering a “retail box” that includes the physical media, a printed manual, and 90 days of installation support.

    OpenSUSE is aimed to the community, but it also serves as the foundation for the SUSE Linux Enterprise version.
